Paraben free

Many of our clients have been requesting paraben free sugar scrub products.  Here's some information you may not know about parabens. Parabens-- such as propylparaben, ethylparaben and butylparaben--are synthetic preservatives commonly used in cosmetics and personal care items. They are suspected to be endocrine disruptors, and they have been found to mimic estrogen in laboratory experiments. Many people have allergic reactions to these preservatives causing skin rashes and irritation. Needless to say, there is a great ongoing debate as to the safety of products containing parabens. Our sugar scrubs are now paraben free.  We are using a blend of Rosemary Oleoresin, Vitamin E and Honey as a preservative in all our sugar scrubs.  Our regular line of spa products has has paraben free lotions, body butter sticks, ultra body creme, massage candles, and massage oils.

More History about Sugar Scrub Benefits

Upon its introduction into the Roman Empire,
sugar was at first viewed as more of a medicinal
substance and not as qualified to sweeten foods as
honey. I can hardly imagine that!

In the medieval time period a major use of cane sugar was,
often in tiny quantities, for medicinal purposes.

Sugar has many beneficial properties for the skin and
it's also antibacterial, so it was used to prevent infection
and scarring.

Sugar is also a humectant, so it was used
draw moisture to the skin, specifically lips.

It was also thru out history used as a
medicine to lower fever, stop chest pains,
stimulate digestion and prevent dry lips.

Springdale Sugar Scrubs for eczema

Springdale Sugar Scrubs can be used for mild eczema or psoriasis.

Did you know that Psoriasis is just abnormally dry and flaky skin.

With normal skin, the cells of the epidermis are regenerated every 28 days,
but the psoriatic skin epidermis works overtime and is regenerated every two to four days.
This results in what appears to be excess dead and dry skin.

Atopic eczema is a kind of eczema most common in babies and young adults,
and thankfully it usually gets better before the person turns 25 years old.
(Some people, though, have it all their lives.) This kind of skin rash is very itchy.

Topical treatments like Springdale Sugar Scrub can help mild eczema or psoriasis.
The Scrub both soothes and moisturizes as it removes dead skin.
The sugar granules in our scrub gently scrape dead skin cells from the epidermis
allowing natural oils return needed moisture to the body.

Sugar Scrubs will remove dead, flaky skin and revitalize your skin leaving
the skin silky smooth and moisturized. As it removes the outer layer of skin
it reveals a smoother, more uniformly colored skin.

Just like all the other products from Springdale, our sugar scrubs do not
contain any harmful ingredients like mineral oil. We only use a healthy
blend of natural oils that are good for your skin.

The sugar scrub will not strip the skin of vital moisture, nor does it
"block" moisture out.

If you’d like to view our products go to www.springdalespa.com
We will be working on our video and the sugar scrub kit in the next few weeks,
and it will be available on our web site just as soon as it’s completed.
I think we will offer our special sugar scrub oils in a quantity that you
can make a gallon of sugar scrub from each batch.

Please let me know if you have any ideas or comments. Linda

What kind of sugar?

Healthy skin has a seduction all its own. Utilizing alpha-hydroxy-rich sugar and the potent natural exfoliating properties of sugar you can have beautiful healthy skin.

It comes off a bit sweet, but I do prefer the brown sugar scrubs over white sugar scrubs myself. I prefer the texture on my skin. Using sugar cane crystals, and a medley of natural nut oils and extracts which we blend here at Springdale Spa you can give your skin that healthy glow.

Glycolic acid, part of the chemical family referred to as alpha-hydroxy acids, is a naturally occurring compound in sugar cane. Alpha hydroxy acids work by stimulating dead cells on the surface of the skin and inside the pores so they can slough off more easily. When the scrub is applied, it helps to dissolve and remove the outer layer of dead skin cells as well as in the pores with ease. By decreasing the thickness of dead cells on the surface, a new layer of skin with a smoother texture and a more uniform color can be revealed.

Do you know how many types of sugar are available and the differences in pricing? As I mentioned previously in this blog we are creating a sugar scrub kit so you can provide your own sugar and labor.

This idea was really brought about to help one of my new customers in Mexico keep his costs down. He can purchase a totally unrefined sugar that’s a bit moist by the kilo, that’s about 100 pounds for about $8.00. This means the color and flavor that is naturally present in sugar cane has not been refined out to make the sugar pure white.

I have not even found a way to purchase that type of sugar here in bulk the United States. The brown sugar we purchase here in the United States is granulated sugar that has been combined with molasses in varying quantities to yield golden, light, or dark brown sugar, with crystals varying from coarse to finely granulated. It still has the same alpha hydroxyl acids.

Demerara sugar is a traditional unrefined sugar, produced so as to have larger and crunchier crystals than granulated sugar. I find that this however, is too rough for a sugar scrub to be used head to toe. There is more 'brown' flavor and scent, and a sparkling appearance. This sugar has a distinctly free-flowing, crunchy texture that's good for sprinkling on your food, or in your tea and coffee, but too scratchy for my skin.

Now, dark Muscovado sugar has plenty of natural molasses but a kind of sticky texture I really don’t like.

I will be talking more about types of sugar next time. If you’d like to view our products go to www.springdalespa.com

We will be working on our video and the sugar scrub kit in the next few weeks, and put it on our web site just as soon as it’s completed. I think we will offer our special sugar scrub oils in a quantity that you can make a gallon of sugar scrub from each batch.

More History on Sugar Scrubs

In 95 AD, in a document entitled "Periplus Maris Erythraei", (or "Guide Book to the Red Sea"), an unknown merchant said there is "Exported commonly....Honey of reeds which is called sakchar."
This is possibly the first mention in European history of the use of sugar cane as an article of commerce.

Sugar cane is mentioned in Chinese and Russian records between 200 and 600 AD and it is believed that sugar cane was introduced into Spain and Egypt around the eighth century.

Roman empress, Poppea Sabina, AD 65, the second wife of Nero, was said to have used a honey, sugar, and milk lotion on her face as a beauty treatment.

Legendary beauties throughout the centuries have used sugar and honey as part of their skin and hair care treatments. Ancient Egyptians developed a concoction of sugar, lemon and water for hair removal, known today as sugaring. There are several spas who offer this hair removal treadment, which leaves your skin very smooth.

Sugar has antiseptic qualities, which means it does not create bumpy, day-after pustules around the treated area. And unlike waxing, sugaring is water soluble, so when the treatment is finished, there are no little bits of wax on the beautiful, bare skin.

History of Sugar Scrubs

How much do you know about the history of sugar and it's first use as a beauty product?
Generally, it's thought that around 20,000 BC, people in the islands of the South
Pacific were the first to find the sugar in sugar cane that grew naturally in their area.
However, India was the first country to extract natural cane juice to make the very first crude sugar, which they called "gur" (loosely translated as "tasting sweet") in 500 BC. Sometime in 510 BC the
Emperor Darius of what was then Persia invaded India where he found what they described as "the reed
which gives honey without bees". Scientists have found writings from the fourth century indicating the use of sugar. Egyptian hieroglyphics dating clear back at least 3,000 years indicate that the art of sugar confectionery was already established. The first record of sugar cane in the Western world was not until in 327 BC. I'll be blogging more sugar information in a few days. Linda

Learning about sugar scrubs

I am sure you know that our skin is exposed to hot and cold weather on a daily basis and this can cause our skin to become dry, itchy and flaky. Taking baths can clean away dirt but it does not remove the dry, flaky skin. Did you know that there are number of benefits of sugar scrubs that you can use in advertising or selling scrubs to your clients. My object in the next few weeks is to increase your knowledge so you can sell features and benefits to your clients and increase your sales. I will be blogging to you soon. Linda
